Philosophy
It may seem strange that I want to build your business by using freely available software, but please allow me to share the why behind the how.
The thought around this are in two areas.
First, some of this theory comes from a concept that I learned from Bruce Perens at the Utah Open Source Conference in 2007. This is part of the theory of how this all works. There are two types of software. Distinguishing and Non-Distinguishing. Software that is Non-Distinguishing is something that really doesn’t set you apart from your competition. For instance, your client doesn’t care if you used OpenOffice.org Calc or some non-free software such as Accpac to make their invoice, all they care about is that they got it. Your client doesn’t care if your website is served by a free apache webserver, or a non-free webserver such as Microsoft IIS. Your client cares that they can get to your website.
Free and Open Source Software is all about providing you with free building blocks to build your business. These building blocks are utilitarian in nature.
By contrast, Distinguishing software is something that sets you apart from your competition. It is the reason that your clients choose you over someone else. They might be something like a great website application or a system that makes your company more efficient and reliable.
Our goal is to use time tested and highly stable open source building blocks to allow your company to operate faster and better with less overhead than the competition.
Second, in the choice of languages and technologies that are used to build your website. The internet should be a place where all people, regardless of there browser or operating system should be able to see your site. This is why I choose to use open standards and open languages when building websites. You want to serve everyone you can, your website should do the same.
